Open and Poly Relationships

People who are in, or are a part of, either open relationships or polyamorous relationships know that they are different. However, they are also not the same as being in monogamous relationships. Being in an open relationship or a polyamorous relationship presents with its own set of issues that monogamous relationships don’t experience, or at least on a grander scale.

When you come to The Mental Wellness Center, Inc to work on issues surrounding open relationships or polyamorous relationships, you may find yourself wanting to address issues such as:

  • Dealing with communicating in non-traditional relationships

  • One partner wants to leave behind monogamy, and the other is “happy” the way their relationship is.

  • Exploring boundaries

  • Jealousy

  • Sexual experiences or sexual growth

  • Differences between how you were raised, and what feels right to you today

  • Parenting in a non-traditional relationship

  • Dealing with fears

  • Understanding yourself on a new and different way.

  • Letting go of the concept that you are weird or there is something wrong with you

  • Time management to handle more than one relationship

  • Prioritizing life duties

  • Understanding the difference between Friends, Friends with Benefits, and a committed relationship.

  • Can sex be just sex without connection/emotion?

  • Can I love more than one person? Is that wrong?

  • Setting yourself up for success in a non-monogamous relationship.

  • But, What will my parents, friends, family, or co-workers think?!?!?!

Or maybe you want to work on regular life struggles, but you don’t seem to be able to find a therapist that is accepting, understanding or knowledgeable in non-monogamous relationships so that you feel heard and understood. This gives you a place to be “real” and not hide essential parts of you because of the fear of being judged while talking about what is going on in your life overall.
