What Can Trauma Therapy Help You Process

Trauma results from exposure to an incident or series of emotionally/physically disturbing or life-threatening events with lasting adverse effects on a person’s functioning. You might feel helpless, disconnected from yourself, or unsure how to process what happened. Over time, this can affect your sense of identity, your emotional range, and your ability to fully feel, trust, and engage with life the way you once did.

Trauma can come from many different kinds of experiences, and if any of the following feel familiar, you’re not alone, and support is available.

  • Physical, sexual, and emotional abuse

  • Childhood neglect

  • Living with a family member with mental health or substance use disorders

  • Sudden, unexplained separation from a loved one

  • Poverty

  • Racism, discrimination, and oppression

  • Violence in the community, war, or terrorism

  • Chronic or invisible illnesses

  • Witnessing or surviving natural disasters

  • Motor vehicle accidents

Work with a Trauma-Informed Therapist Who Truly Understands

We understand that trauma can shape how you feel in your body, your relationships, and your sense of safety, so our therapists specialize in trauma and use evidence-based approaches like EMDR, CBT, and mindfulness-based therapy to support healing without pushing you to share more than you’re ready for.

We create a space where your story is honored, your identity is affirmed, and healing can unfold at a pace that feels manageable and supportive. Currently, no criteria or objective measures exist to classify which events will cause Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. But we do know that the trauma does not necessarily need to rise to the level of natural disaster, great personal injury, or war to be classified as PTSD.

  • A trauma therapist at our practice is a licensed professional with specialized trauma training and additional training in trauma-focused therapy such as EMDR, DBT, somatic experiencing, and cognitive-behavioral therapy. We work with clients who have experienced trauma across the lifespan, from childhood abuse or neglect to recent traumatic events, and tailor trauma treatment to each person’s unique needs. Our goal is to provide a safe and supportive environment where you can process traumatic memories, develop coping strategies, and regain a sense of stability and overall quality of life.

  • Common symptoms of trauma can include intrusive memories or flashbacks of a traumatic experience, difficulty trusting others, strong emotional reactions or anxiety, and negative thought patterns about yourself or the world. Some trauma survivors may also experience sleep issues, physical tension, or feeling disconnected. If left untreated, these effects of trauma can impact daily life, relationships, and overall mental health, but trauma-focused therapy can help you process past trauma and begin healing.

  • The impact of trauma can shape how someone thinks, feels, and responds long after a traumatic event has passed. Individuals who have experienced trauma may struggle with anxiety, depression, complex PTSD, or emotional and physical stress responses. Trauma can affect relationships, coping skills, and overall quality of life, but working with a therapist who specializes in treating trauma can help you process past trauma, develop new tools, and feel more grounded and safe in your day-to-day life.

  • EMDR therapy is a trauma-focused type of therapy that helps the brain reprocess traumatic memories so they feel less overwhelming. With advanced EMDR training, our therapists guide you through structured therapy sessions using techniques that support the brain’s natural healing and information processing. Often used for posttraumatic stress disorder and other trauma-related concerns, EMDR can help clients move through distressing memories, reduce emotional intensity, and support an adaptive response to trauma as part of the healing process.

  • Yes, we accept insurance for many of our counseling and trauma treatment services.
