5 Myths About EMDR Intensives (and the Truths You Need to Know)

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) Intensives are often misunderstood and highly stigmatized. The reality is that many clients find intensive therapy more effective than traditional weekly therapy for certain issues. Intensives often create breakthroughs when progress has stalled in conventional therapy. The concentrated format of an Intensive allows for complete processing without weekly interruptions.

Myth #1: “It’s just cramming therapy into one day.”

EMDR Intensives are carefully structured with distinct phases, not rushed therapy. The format of an intensive allows for deeper processing without the “start-stop” pattern of weekly sessions. Intensive sessions are designed with intentional pacing based on neuroscience principles. The structure prioritizes integration time between processing sessions. Clinicians who offer intensives have specialized training beyond the standard EMDR.  There is significant research that shows condensed formats can be more efficient for certain types of processing.

Myth #2:  “You have to be super strong to do it.”

The willingness that you consistently demonstrate in an effort to heal matters more than emotional strength or resilience. When you engage in an EMDR intensive, the therapist will meet you where you are and adjust the approach accordingly.  Many clients who thought they weren’t “strong enough” find intensives more manageable. The intensive format provides consistent support through the entire process.

Establishing a dedicated recovery time afterward makes the process much more accessible. In offering EMDR intensives, I have worked with a man who initially had no access to his own feelings and emotions, a person who had become addicted to alcohol, and many people who are living with complex trauma.  I have also provided EMDR Intensives for people who have high levels of dissociation, people who have chronic pain, as well as those who have chronic illness. They have all found EMDR intensives very beneficial.

Myth #3: “It’s too overwhelming to handle”

Intensives prioritize emotional regulation from the beginning and through to the end of the intensive.  Therapists teach and practice grounding skills before any processing begins. Additionally, most therapists will introduce and demonstrate skills that can regulate your nervous system.

The continuous presence of the therapist provides immediate support if distress arises. Regular breaks and check-ins are built into the schedule. These breaks and check-ins will be discussed at the very beginning of the intensive and planned in advance.

The environment for your intensive will be specifically designed for comfort and safety. For some clients, that will mean engaging in a virtual intensive. For some, that will mean bringing a blanket or their favorite stuffed animal with them to the intensive. In an intensive, you will earn personalized regulation strategies that you can use long after the intensive.

Myth #4: “ You won’t remember anything afterwards.”

This is not hypnosis, and you will be awake and alert for all of the processing of your trauma. While emotional processing can be demanding, most clients report enhanced clarity. Unlike overwhelming trauma experiences, proper processing creates coherent memories. The brain works to integrate information more effectively during focused work.

Clients typically leave EMDR Intensives with a clearer insight and the ability to connect more authentically and easily. Many EMDR intensive therapists offer post-intensive follow-up, which ensures retention of insights and progress. Many clients report feeling mentally “lighter” with increased capacity for new experiences.

Myth #5: “It’s only for severe trauma.”

EMDR intensives effectively address a wide range of challenges:

  • Performance anxiety and creative blocks

  • Relationships patterns and attachment issues

  • Phobias and specific fears

  • Grief and loss processing

  • Self-esteem and identity concerns

  • Life transitions and decision-making

The intensive format can be particularly helpful for time-sensitive issues. I have worked with clients who wanted to stop engaging in addictive behaviors prior to their child’s birth, clients who wanted to decrease their anxiety before their wedding, and clients who were super dissociative and couldn’t stay present.

While EMDR was initially recognized for its effectiveness treating PTSD, research has increasingly demonstrated its efficacy across numerous other conditions. Studies show that EMDR intensives can effectively address generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, depression, and specific phobias. Research published in the Journal of EMDR Practice and Research has documented successful outcomes for performance anxiety, chronic pain, and even certain somatic conditions. A 2023 meta-analysis found that intensive EMDR formats showed comparable or better outcomes than traditional weekly sessions for various non-trauma presentations. These findings align with what we see in clinical practice - clients experiencing meaningful relief from perfectionism, relationship patterns, and even challenging life transitions through the intensive format. The research continues to expand, confirming what many practitioners have observed: EMDR's adaptive information processing model benefits many conditions where difficult experiences or beliefs have become 'stuck' in the nervous system.

Intensives can be a very time-efficient solution for busy professionals who struggle to attend traditional weekly therapy.  While many people have objections to the cost of EMDR Intensives, when compared to years of weekly therapy, an intensive is likely more cost-effective.
