Licensed Therapists Insurance Accepted In-Person & Telehealth Serving Central Illinois
There's usually a moment that brings someone to PTSD treatment. Maybe it's the third night in a row of nightmares. Maybe it's realizing you've gone numb to people who love you, or that you're scanning every room for exits before you've even sat down. Maybe it's a flashback that pulled you out of the present so completely that it scared you. Whatever brought you here, managing PTSD symptoms on your own can be exhausting, and you don't have to keep doing it that way.
At The Mental Wellness Center, our PTSD therapists provide trauma-focused therapy, including EMDR, to help you process what happened and get your nervous system out of survival mode.
PTSD Treatment for Every Kind of Trauma
PTSD doesn't come from one kind of experience, and it doesn't look the same for everyone. We provide PTSD treatment for people navigating:
First responder trauma from cumulative exposure or a single critical incident.
Combat trauma and military-related PTSD
Car accidents, serious injuries, or other sudden traumatic events
Sexual trauma and abuse, at any point in life
Childhood abuse or neglect, which can lead to complex PTSD and difficulty trusting others well into adulthood
Ongoing or repeated trauma, not just a single incident
Whether your trauma happened once or unfolded over years, it's valid, and it's treatable.
PTSD Therapy Using EMDR and Evidence-Based Approaches
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, or EMDR, is one of our core approaches to PTSD therapy. EMDR helps your brain reprocess traumatic memories so they no longer feel like a current threat, using guided eye movements or other bilateral stimulation while you focus on a specific memory.
It's one of the most researched, evidence-based treatments for PTSD, and it doesn't require you to narrate every detail of what happened out loud. We also offer EMDR intensives, which involve longer sessions over a few days instead of months of weekly therapy, for people who want faster relief.
Alongside EMDR, we use cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and trauma-informed care to build coping skills for anxiety and depression that often accompany PTSD.
What Your First Trauma Counseling Session Actually Looks Like
One of the biggest reasons people put off PTSD counseling is fear of having to relive the trauma out loud, in detail, right away. That's not how we start.
Your first session is a conversation, not an interrogation. We'll talk about what's been happening for you day to day, including sleep issues, nightmares, hypervigilance, flashbacks, numbness, whatever else you're noticing, and what you'd like to be different.
You set the pace for when and how much detail you share about past events. Building a sense of safety with your therapist comes first, and the deeper trauma processing work, including EMDR, only happens once you're ready for it.

Look for a licensed therapist trained in trauma-focused, evidence-based approaches like EMDR or trauma-focused CBT, not just general talk therapy. Trauma-specific training makes a real difference in how effectively PTSD symptoms are treated.

Trauma therapy uses specific, research-backed techniques, like EMDR, that target how traumatic memories are stored in the brain and body, not just how you think or talk about them. It's more structured and paced than open-ended talk therapy.
